“Kill to
Eat” by Oodgeroo Nunukul tells the story of an aboriginal’ family. This family
has a lot of respect for nature but five of the brothers and sisters broke
this respect by killing a kookaburra. Kill to Eat show the coming of age in
this family.
In the
story, coming on age brings more rights than when they were younger. The eldest
could make their own weapons and go hunting from their own. Also when they go
hunting, the eldest start the shooting. Another right is that the eldest has
the respect from the youngest. “He only
boasted in front of us knowing that we wouldn’t complain about him to our
parents.” This quote explains another right they have that is that they can
enjoy being the eldest.
Another
thing of coming of age has their responsibilities. “We must all take the blame.”
This quote show one of the responsibilities that they are responsible of what
they do. Apart from this, when they come older they have to be a good model for
the youngest this mean that they have to follow the rules.
In conclusion,
coming of age brings more rights than when they were youngest but also with these
rights also brings responsibilities. They
could go hunting by they own but they have to be responsible of what they do.
